Reputation There is growing concern that private companies are proving that adults have ADHD with low quality assessments and staff who are not properly trained. BBC Panorama recently highlighted this issue. The GP should refer patients who suspect they have ADHD to the NHS Adult ADHD service. They should be aware of the risk that a person could be misdiagnosed and receive medications they don't require. Psychiatrists and specialists ADHD nurses are the only people who can formally assess ADHD. Counsellors and other mental health professionals cannot diagnose ADHD. However they can help you recognize the symptoms and offer support. If you choose to have an individual ADHD assessment, make sure that the psychiatrist or nurse is enrolled on the General Medical Council's specialist register. They must be able to prescribe medication that is only available if an official diagnosis of psychiatric illness has been established. A complete ADHD assessment will require several appointments, tests, and observations. If your doctor suggests an ADHD assessment, select an agency with a good reputation.
